Getting to Know Barbara
Why do you feel “called to care” about Disciples health and social service ministry?
I’ve had a servant heart from a very early age. I’m particularly passionate about social justice and women’s empowerment–addressing the root causes of injustice and inequality. I’m a fundraiser not because I want to raise money, but because I want to help change the world. If I raise a lot of money but fail to help bring about justice and equity with that funding, I have not done my job. These values are right in line with the values of the National Benevolent Association.
Who is a hero of yours, and why?
I would have to say Sr. Joan Chittister. I admire how she is free and empowered to speak her truth and to tell the stories that matter.
If I tried to find you in a supermarket, what aisle would you be in?
Fruits and vegetables. Lots of bright colors, with food directly from the earth – nothing processed!
