Getting to know Brittany
Why do you feel “called to care” about Disciples health and social service ministry?
I feel called to care because I believe it’s my duty as a Christian. God didn’t call us to be stagnant or quiet, especially in situations of injustice. I’m so moved by the work the NBA does with mental health, mass incarceration, and social entrepreneurship and really glad to be part of it!
Who is a hero of yours, and why?
I can’t pick just one! Truly any Black woman writer of my time is a hero of mine—Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Roxane Gay, Elaine Welteroth—I’m inspired by these women because they refused the status quo. Their works center Black voices in a way that mainstream media does not and they each have been successful at carving out their own lane for themselves and their work. As a writer, I’m moved by their confidence and courage, it inspires me to do the same.
If I tried to find you in a supermarket, what aisle would you be in?
Probably in the produce section questioning if I have enough garlic in my cart because I put it in almost everything I cook throughout the week!
