SUMMARY:Transforming Isolation into Belonging: Building Communities and Radical Care Through Peer Groups
DESCRIPTION:Ahead of the 2025 General Assembly\, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is hosting a dynamic Virtual Learning Experience on June 11 and 14 where attendees can choose from 10 engaging virtual workshops tailored to inspire\, equip\, and elevate. The event will take place in two parts: Wednesday\, June 11 from 7:30- 9:00pm ET/6:30-8:00pm CT and Saturday\, June 14 from 9:30- 11:30am ET/8:30-10:30 am CT. Each session will begin with a time of devotion followed by the opportunity to attend one of the workshops offered at that time. The workshops will be an hour and 15 minutes. \nThis includes the workshop “Transforming Isolation into Belonging: Building Communities and Radical Care through Peer Groups”\, featuring NBA’s Director of Community Engagement\, Rev. Héctor J. Hernández Marcial. The webinar will take place on Wednesday\, June 11th at 7:30pm ET/6:30pm CT. \nDuring the webinar we will share the NBA peer group model\, which effectively connects and supports Clergy\, Chaplains\, Health and Social Services leaders and practitioners. This model helps them improve their skills and find support among colleagues. We will also discuss the potential for adapting and customizing the model for use in other settings. Participants will get hands-on experience with key aspects of our model and will receive a toolkit that can be used in their ministries and communities. \n  \nRegister Here \n\n\n  \nRev. Héctor J. DESCRIPTION:Rev. Joselyn Spence and Rev. Tiffany Curtis\, co-convenors of NBA’s Chaplain Peer Learning and Wellness Group\, are pleased to invite you to join our chaplains for an open house on Movement Chaplaincy! \nMovement Chaplaincy is the work of spiritual accompaniment to social justice movements and their leaders. In this webinar\, Rev. Elizabeth Nguyen will share her experience as a movement chaplain and lead an exploration of examples of spiritual support as part of movements for collective liberation drawing on wisdom from the Movement for Black Lives\, Standing Rock\, the struggle for a Free Palestine and the fight against deportations. Together\, attendees will think about how our skills fit with the needs of this political moment as the needs of our communities rise. \nThis open house will take place on Wednesday\, May 28th at 2:00pm ET/1:00pm CT. As a holistic wellness specialist\, she has worked at the intersection of these passions to develop research and provide empathic care to all she is called to serve. \nRev. Tiffany Curtis is trained as a clinical chaplain\, spiritual director\, and facilitator\, and has worked extensively as a community organizer and in prison settings. She serves as a Peer Group Convener for NBA and has ongoing commitments to grassroots community work in the U.S.\, Ecuador\, and Honduras. Tiffany grew up in a bilingual family and in an immigrant congregation in southern California. She now lives in New Mexico and is the minister of The Open Circle: A Disciples of Christ Community\, and is also the co-founder and lead organizer of the Santa Fe Faith Network for Immigrant Justice. Tiffany holds a B.A. from Chapman University in Peace Studies and Latin American Studies and an M.Div. from Harvard University. Tiffany is nourished by quality time with loved ones\, practicing yoga\, and being outside. \n \nRev. Elizabeth Nguyen co-directs the National Bail Fund Network with Community Justice Exchange. She is a Unitarian Universalist community minister affiliated with First Parish in Malden. She has helped to start multiple communities of justice and spirit including the Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network and the Sanctuary Boston. He brings exceptional dedication and meticulous preparation working at the intersection of faith and mental health as he has collaborated with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)\, to further enhance his expertise in addressing mental health and substance use disorders within faith communities.  \n  \nPastor Rossy Castillo is the dedicated pastor of Iglesia Hermandad Cristiana (Discípulos de Cristo) in Indianapolis\, Indiana. A lifelong servant of the church\, she began her ministry at a young age\, becoming a Sunday School teacher at 10 and leading various church ministries in her teens. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Theology\, she served as an interim pastor for churches planted by her father. Since moving from the Dominican Republic to Indianapolis\, she has held numerous leadership roles\, including serving on the General Commission on Ministry (GCOM) and the board of Obra Hispana. Currently\, she is the moderator of the Midwest Convention of the Obra Hispana. She has been honored with the “Woman of the Year” (2012) award and the “Legado” award (2018) for her impactful work within the community. \n  \nRev. Dr. Cedrick Von Jackson is a distinguished preacher\, poet\, speaker\, writer\, and educator\, currently serving as the Senior Pastor of the Historic West Hunter Street Baptist Church in Atlanta\, GA. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Memphis Theological Seminary\, he holds a Doctor of Ministry focused on rethinking mental health in the African American church. With over 27 years in education\, he has been recognized for his leadership as an administrator\, teacher\, and advocate\, serving on the advisory board of WomanPreach! Inc. and contributing sermons and writings to The African American Pulpit and The African American Lectionary. A passionate author\, Pastor J has published two poetry anthologies—Following the Breadcrumb Path: Navigating the Journey Toward God\, Justice\, and Love and Theoethnimusicology\, Vol. 1 – Nothin’ But the Blues—works that intertwine faith\, justice\, and the narrative of the Blues. A member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity\, Inc.\, he enjoys traveling\, skiing\, and writing poetry. He has been married to his college sweetheart\, Eulanda Willis\, for 30 years\, and together they share two children\, a son-in-law\, and their beloved dog\, Lady.\n \n  \nTaulau (Tau) Tupua is a dedicated faith leader and educator with a strong background in youth ministry\, interfaith engagement\, and community service. He recently served as Associate Pastor of Youth & Mission at First Christian Church of North Hollywood\, where he cultivated spiritual formation and mission-driven service among youth and young adults. NBA’s leadership development grants are designed to enhance and promote the health\, well-being\, and skill development of organizational leaders. \nExecutives and Leaders of Disciples-affiliated Health and Social Service organizations are eligible to apply for Leadership Development Grants up to $1000 per year. Grant funding may cover courses\, seminars\, workshops\, or coaching that enhance the knowledge and skill set of organizational leaders to work more effectively. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThrough NBA’s Young Adult Leadership Development (YALD) program area\, we seek to co-create spaces with and for young adults 18-30 to flourish in life and service. NBA’s YALD grants are specifically designed to support current and future leaders in identifying their leadership qualities\, building leadership capacity\, and allowing young adults to explore new possibilities in the areas of service and justice. Young adults are eligible to apply for either a Development Grant or an Exploration/Ingenuity Grant. \nDevelopment Grants\nThese grants are intended for: \n\nYoung adults working in a health and social service profession seeking additional training to enhance their knowledge/skills to be more effective in their current role or seeking to advance beyond that role.\nYoung adults seeking more broad leadership training to hone specific skills in church or community leadership (ex. diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and belonging training\, conflict transformation\, community organizer training\, etc.)\nYoung adults seeking assistance for formal courses related to fields of study in health and social services.\n\nExploration/Ingenuity Grants\nThis grant is for young adults who desire to pursue a passion project\, social enterprise idea\, or advance a project they already started.
