Gathering Space

Disciples Christian Church, Cleveland Heights, OH

The Gathering Space will provide a space for the area's Bhutanese immigrant families to meet and learn basic life skills. The local library is overwhelmed with Bhutanese youth who are seeking a space to socialize, learn, and have computer access. The Gathering Space will provide a chance for youth to learn basic life skills. These skills will include areas from banking, to job applications, to grocery shopping, to English as a second language. The staff would assess the needs of the attending community and then focus on those needs.  The Gathering Space would be open two to three days at first, during after school hours. There would be two volunteers on site at all times. Their job would be to supervise the space and to provide on site training on the above mentioned categories. Computers would be available for homework, job searching, and general access during these hours.  Classes focusing on specific life skills would be offered though out each month. Other resources such as books and classroom supplies would be available for this community as well. In addition, a fellowship/ socializing component would be part of the programming. A coordinator would be required for scheduling volunteers, classes, and so forth. The program and space would vary according to the needs of those attending.
