In July, I got to participate at the 2017 General Assembly for my first time ever. The week was filled with workshops, worship, business sessions, and the chance to learn about different ministries within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination.

I was able to be involved in the Disciples Rally for Family Justice that took place on Saturday. During the rally, we marched down the streets of Indianapolis. Different speakers came up and challenged us to get involved in social justice. These speakers told us their stories; it was a very inspirational time.  During the business sessions, I was assigned to be a mic monitor. I also got to listen in on the resolutions, which were brought to the church for our discussion as a community. I loved seeing the church come together as one, to pass resolutions that will help the church and also go outside of those four walls.

I got to see old friends and was able to meet new friends. I believe making connections is important in the church community; I had the chance to do that. One of the coolest parts of the assembly was getting the chance to talk about my year in the NBA XPLOR program with many young adults.

During the entire week of General Assembly, I was challenged by speakers that we are called to something greater than ourselves—that it is not about us, but about those around us.  I was encouraged every day to love as Christ has loved me, to fight for social justice. This year our theme was “One,” and during the assembly I could sense that oneness with those around me. I could see it all around me as we laughed together, dined together, and sought out ways in which we can make the world around us a little better. General Assembly allowed me the chance to really see how the Disciples of Christ church wants to change the face of social justice; I was able to see that passion in each face. I am grateful that I was a part of General Assembly; the week filled my spirit up. I left excited and ready to be a light in a broken world.
