Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be an active member of a Disciples church?

Not necessarily. We are looking for young adults affiliated or related to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination. This may look like being members of a local congregation or actively participating in a Disciples congregation without being a member, or even being engaged with a Disciples-related ministry or nonprofit.

Does my social service work need to be tied to a congregation?

Although some churches have social services ministries, your work can be done outside of a congregation and even through non-religious organizations, as long as it is social service work.

Does my pastor need to approve or support my participation?

We will ask for your congregation’s name and your pastor’s name (if applicable), only as a way to connect and engage with them, but there is no need for approval.

What is considered social services?

The National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is dedicated to accompanying and partnering with health and social service projects and ministries. We accomplish this by focusing on three key areas: Organizational Development, Leadership Development, and Community Engagement. Some examples of social services are work and/or ministries focused on social justice and advocacy, mental health, health care, community work, social work, food security, and housing.

Can I participate even if I do this work on a part-time or voluntary basis?

Yes! Your work and engagement matters whether it is done on a paid full-time, paid part-time, or voluntary basis.

What if I can’t make it to all of the meetings?

While we expect your commitment and active participation throughout the fullness of the two years, we understand that life happens and emergencies occur.

What if I change jobs during the course of this group? Can I still stay a member of the group?

Absolutely! Our commitment is with you and not with what you do.

I see there is some traveling involved, will I have to pay for my own travel or participation costs?

All traveling expenses made as part of this PLWG are fully covered by the NBA. This includes transportation, lodging, and meals.

Is there a fee to participate?

No. There is no application fee or participation fee of any kind.

How do I apply?

Please visit our website, and fill out an application. The application will not save your work if you start it and come back to finish later, but it is relatively easy. Reach out to bgilsoto@nbacares.org if you have any questions during the application process.

Is there a stipend?

All members of the Young Adults in Social Services PLWG will be awarded a wellness grant. This will be given in four installments of $250, for a total of $1000 per person. The purpose of these funds is to assist you in creating and/or supporting your efforts toward a sustainable self-care plan.

How many people will be in the peer group?

The group will be comprised of 8 to 10 young adults (21-30 years old) engaged in the social services field.

If I am interested in working in a social services-related field but don’t have experience, can I still join the group?

At this moment, we are looking for young adults currently serving in social services ministries or jobs. If you are interested in being part of a peer group, we invite you to check out our website and sign up for our newsletter to learn about future opportunities.

My question isn’t listed.
