Our History

The legacy and history of the National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is filled with the healing care and faithful commitment to service by many "clouds of witnesses" (Hebrews 12:1). Since 1886, the NBA is the general ministry for health and social services of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). As an established and recognized ministry within the denomination, the NBA serves in collaborative partnership with local congregations, regions and other general ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and Disciples-related health and direct care providers. From its beginning, the NBA has responded to God's call to care for the "least of these" (Matthew 25:40).

We also claim our mission through a deep connection to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) statement of identity:

We are a Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord's Table as God has welcomed us.

As we live into the second decade of the 21st Century, we remain moved by Matilda Hart Younkin and the five other Christian women who gathered in discernment and prayer in those early years. Thank you for your support as we continue to create communities of compassion and care!
