Upon the diagnosis of a child’s disability, families find themselves on a lonely journey in which they are isolated from friends, other families who care for children with special needs, and the community. The constant care demands of the child’s disability creates stress and leaves little time for relationships and personal care. SHARE provides respite care for these families.

Respite is a gift of time that parents use to spend on relationships, connect with other parents and resources, go on a date, take a break, or simply rest. SHARE provides parent support groups so that parents can share “their story” with others who genuinely understand their challenges. Counseling services are also provided. Family events are hosted so that families can celebrate these occasions in a stress-free environment. A Father’s Network and Mom’s Night Out are also provided. SHARE hosts Sibshops and socials for siblings. These programs give siblings a chance to discuss common joys and concerns with other siblings who know what it’s like to have a brother or sister with special needs. Siblings are able to develop a support system since they will have the longest lasting relationship with the person who has special needs.

SHARE cares for the whole family because strong families are needed to provide care for the person with special needs – now and well into the future.
