Last month, our Health & Social Services Executive Leaders Peer Learning and Wellness Group gathered for a truly special retreat at Frog Creek Lodge in Lakebay, Washington—just an hour outside of Seattle. Nestled in quiet, serene nature and surrounded by towering trees, the lodge offered the perfect setting for reflection, connection, and rejuvenation.

From the moment we arrived, the peaceful ambiance of the lodge set the tone. Frog-themed décor greeted us at every turn, adding a funny charm to the tranquil surroundings. The weather was gorgeous, and the natural beauty of the area—complete with a walking trail leading to a labyrinth and a stunning treehouse—invited moments of quiet contemplation and meaningful conversation.
Throughout the weekend, our leaders engaged in deep discussions about the multifaceted roles Executive Directors play—often wearing multiple hats simultaneously. These conversations were not only insightful but also supportive, as leaders shared advice, experiences, and encouragement with one another.
One of the highlights of the retreat was our exploration of The Great Mental Models: Volume 1 by Shane Parrish. This powerful resource sparked thoughtful dialogue on decision-making, leadership, and mental clarity. We also heard inspiring stories from our peers.

Rev. Dr. Aizaiah Young shared his journey transitioning to a new leadership role and relocating with his family from California to Minnesota. Rev. Brenda Booth, Executive Director of NBA partner Isaiah 58 Ministries, offered valuable insights from her experience leading a capital campaign. And we were honored by a visit from NBA President & CEO Mark Anderson, who led us in conversation around the future of the NBA. Each day was anchored by shared meals—both at the lodge and at local eateries—fostering a sense of community and camaraderie that carried through every conversation.
It’s safe to say the retreat was a resounding success. Our leaders returned to their organizations refreshed, reenergized, and ready to continue their impactful work with renewed purpose.
