The Power of Connection

As part of our year-end giving campaign this year, we’re looking at ways that NBA brings justice to life every day, through clarity, courage, and creativity. Between now and the end of the year, we will offer a deeper dive into the justice work being done through the work of NBA’s program areas and the faces of people involved with these programs. For aspiring social entrepreneurs, developing a social enterprise from concept to implementation isn’t easy. However, through educational opportunities, relationship building and support from fellow social entrepreneurs through a group setting, these individuals can take steps towards seeing their dream become a reality. According to NBA’s Director of Social Entrepreneurship, Rev. Darnell Fennell, this is the inspiration that led to the creation of NBA’s Social Entrepreneurship Cohort program.

“There is something powerful about bringing creators together,” said Rev. Fennell. “We have seen firsthand the inspiration and learnings that happens when social entrepreneurs are able to connect with the work of others.”

The SENT Cohort initiative was established in 2021. Prior to this, NBA’s Social Entrepreneurship Program hosted an in-person SENT Seminar event for up and coming social entrepreneurs. However, in 2020 this event was transitioned to a virtual format, allowing the Social Entrepreneurship team the opportunity to offer additional resources to a higher number of social entrepreneurs.

Since its inception, the SENT Cohort Program has worked with over 50 social entrepreneurs working through a year-long process of formation, building relationships and learning to help them bring their social enterprise visions to life. Over the course of the year cohort members will participate in four huddles (two in-person and two virtual), multi-day sessions that allow members to connect and learn from each other. In addition, each cohort member receives specialized coaching to help and strengthen their organization and have access to ongoing learning and networking opportunities through NBA, including the annual SENT Seminar held each fall.

Early next year, NBA’s Social Entrepreneurship team will announce the members of the 2026 SENT Cohort, continuing this work of collaboration and accompaniment with another round of social entrepreneurs working to improve the communities around them.
