Making a Meaningful Impact in Plymouth

Adrienne Wren noticed that people in her community were facing financial hardships that made it difficult to supply basic household items for themselves and their families. “I began to realize how many people in my community couldn’t supply necessities for themselves and their families,” she said, “and I saw an opportunity to help.” With the assistance of a Young Adult Leadership Development (YALD) grant from NBA, Adrienne’s Pantry was created.

Based at Plymouth Christian Church in Plymouth, PA, Adrienne’s Pantry supplies families and individuals with household items to supplement their income. The pantry offers many different types of items including diapers, wipes, toilet paper, paper towels, household cleaners, health and beauty, feminine products, hats, gloves, and some non-perishable food items. She intentionally chose supplies that could help people in many different situations, especially during difficult times in the middle of the month when funds often run low.
The impact was immediate. “After opening the pantry to the public, we had numerous community members come and use the pantry to get some items they needed,” said Adrienne. “This made me so happy, the feeling that I was helping someone who really needed it.”

The project also allowed Adrienne to reconnect with her home congregation while away at college, as church members supported her by donating supplies and helping organize the pantry. Additionally, she learned more about herself through the development process. “I realized that I might not be able to solve major problems, but I can make a difference by focusing on smaller things that I can control.”
Currently a student in nursing school, Adrienne even sees the impact of the pantry in her future occupation. “I will be working with individuals and families that may be struggling in my community. This project has opened my eyes to seeing them differently. They are no different from myself, and they deserve just as much compassion.”
Adrienne encourages all young adults to consider applying for a NBA YALD grant. “It gives young adults the opportunity to do something that can benefit their community or congregation,” she said. “I am thankful for this opportunity and am very appreciative of all the support that I have received.”
