Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be an active member of a Disciples church?

We are looking for young adults affiliated or related to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This may look like being members of a local congregation, or actively participating in a Disciples congregation without necessarily being already a member, or being engaged with a Disciples-related ministry/organization.

Does my pastor need to approve or support my participation?

We will ask for your congregation's name and your pastor's name (if applicable), only as a way to connect and engage with them, but there is no need of approval.

What is BIWOC?

BIWOC includes Black, Indigenous, and Women of Color. Black refers to a person of African descent. Indigenous includes Native American, First Nations, Aboriginal, and others whose social origin is native. Women of Color refers to non-white racial and ethnic women including but not limited to Asian/Asian American and Latina. Acknowledging that this group centers BIPOC women the group will mostly be facilitated in English. However, we aim to honor the multilingual, multi-culural origins of all in the group.

Can I participate even if I do this work on a part-time or voluntary basis?

Yes! Your work and engagement matters whether it is done on a paid full-time, paid part-time, or voluntary basis.

What if I can't make it to all of the meetings?

Whereas we expect your commitment and active participation thrpoughout the fullness of the journey, we understand that life happens and emergencies occur.

What if I change jobs during the course of this group? Can I still stay member of the group?

Absolutely! Our commitment is with you and not with what you do.

I see there is some traveling involved, will I have to pay for my own travel or participation costs?

All traveling expenses made as part of this PL&WG are fully covered by the NBA. This includes transportation, lodging, and meals.

Is there any fee to participate?

No. There is no application fee or participation fee of any kind.

 How do I apply?

Is there a stipend?

All members of the peer learning group will be awarded a wellness grant. This will be given in four installments of $250, for a total of $1000 per person. The purpose of these funds are to assist you in creating and/or supporting your efforts towards a sustainable self-care plan

How many people will be in the group?

The group will be comprised of 8 to 10 BIPOC Young Adult Women (22-30 years old).

Which types of ministry  involvement qualify for this peer learning group?

Some ministry happens in the church, and your work can be done outside of a congregation. Ministry includes, but is not limited to congregations, community organizations, health & social service ministries, justice work and even non-religious organizations. What is most important is that your ministry focuses on the well-being and thriving of others.
