Beyond the Ask: Building Trust and Momentum for Year-End Giving
July 28, 2026 | by NBA Cares

As nonprofits begin preparing for the final months of the year, year-end giving offers more than a fundraising deadline. It is an opportunity to deepen relationships, tell a clearer story of impact, and invite supporters to participate in mission-centered work with renewed purpose. For organizations across the Health and Social Services community, a strong year-end campaign begins long before December and is grounded in trust, gratitude, and thoughtful communication.

NBAās Director of Development Paige Bobbitt, emphasized the importance of starting early and focusing on donor relationships rather than year-end solicitations alone. āSegmented outreach often performs better than a one-size-fits-all appeal because it allows organizations to tailor messages for current donors, lapsed donors, prospective supporters, and major contributors,ā she said. Bobbitt also mentioned that gratitude and stewardship are just as important as the ask: donors respond when they clearly understand the impact of their giving and feel genuinely appreciated.
Bobbittās practical advice also points to a foundational truth of effective fundraising: good systems support good relationships. āClean donor data, updated contact information, accurate giving histories, and ready-to-go gift acknowledgment processes can make the difference between a stressful campaign and a responsive one.ā When the busy season arrives, organizations with clear messaging, reliable systems, and timely follow-up are better positioned to steward generosity with care.

Rev. Nathan Day Wilson, NBAās Associate Vice President of Strategic Development, stated that an important focus should be placed on the donor experience. āIn a crowded fundraising environment,ā he remarked, āorganizations that consistently build and maintain trust are better positioned for long-term success. Trust is earned through transparency, authenticity, and keeping promises about impact.ā Additionally, Rev. Wilson shared a reminder that generosity is fundamentally relational rather than transactional. āThe strongest year-end campaigns are often the result of meaningful engagement throughout the year, so that an ask in December feels like a natural extension of an ongoing relationship.ā
Rev. Wilson also named one of the most important questions donors bring to any campaign: āWhat will my gift do?ā Answering that question clearly helps supporters see the difference their generosity can make. Whether communicating through email, direct mail, social media, phone calls, or in-person visits, nonprofits should connect giving opportunities to specific outcomes, community impact, and stories that reflect the organizationās mission in action.
Key Considerations for a Strong Year-End Strategy
Three priorities can help nonprofits strengthen their year-end strategy:
- First, begin with reflection and data by reviewing past campaign performance, donor response patterns, and messaging effectiveness to set realistic goals.
- Second, segment outreach so communications speak directly to current donors, lapsed donors, prospects, major supporters, and other key audiences in ways that feel personal and relevant.
- Third, lead with gratitude and clear impact by thanking supporters for what they have already made possible and helping them understand exactly how their continued generosity can support people, programs, and communities.
Year-end giving is often one of the most visible fundraising moments of the year, but its success depends on what happens before, during, and after the campaign. As the giving season approaches, now is the time to move beyond the ask. Start planning, strengthen your systems, reconnect with donors, and tell the story of your impact with clarity and care. By building trust, nurturing relationships, and inviting generosity with purpose, nonprofits can help supporters see that their gifts are part of a larger story of care, connection, and community transformation.
