Chaplaincy at NBA: Presence, Healing, and Justice in Community
December 3, 2025 | by NBA Cares

As part of our year-end justice campaign, we’re highlighting how NBA brings justice to life every day—through presence, healing, and the transformative work of chaplaincy, among other initiatives that foster justice and well-being across our communities.
Meeting People Where They Are

Chaplaincy is more than a role—it’s a calling to meet people at the intersections of vulnerability, hope, and transformation. At the National Benevolent Association (NBA), we provide support to chaplains serving in diverse settings: hospitals, re-entry programs, and especially within prison and jail ministries. Their work is rooted in presence, deep listening, and the creation of spaces where healing and renewal can take root.
“Participating in the Prison and Jail Ministries Peer Learning and Wellness Group was a meaningful experience for me at a pivotal time in my life and ministry… I wanted to shape and co-create a space for reflection, renewal, and belonging for spiritual leaders.” -Rev. Tiffany Curtis, Co-Convener, Chaplains Peer Learning & Wellness Group
The Power of Peer Learning and Community
NBA’s Peer Learning & Wellness Groups are at the heart of this work. These groups bring together chaplains, pastors, and spiritual leaders from across the country, fostering a community of support, growth, and shared wisdom. Through regular gatherings—both virtual and in-person—participants find not only professional development, but also a sense of belonging and mutual care.

“When I was invited back as a Co-Convener for this current cohort, I jumped at the opportunity to reconnect. I hope I can share Restorative Justice values and practices in ways that benefit the NBA and the wider world of Disciples’ faith communities.”- Rev. Nora Jacob, Co-Convener, Prison & Jail Ministry Peer Learning & Wellness Group
Last fall, the second cohort of the Chaplains Peer Learning & Wellness Group launched. This two-year program connects individuals serving in various forms of chaplaincy across the life of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and will give attention to secondary trauma, mental health and wellness, personal spiritual practices, and the formation of a healthy work/life balance.
NBA also hosts a Prison & Jail Ministry Peer Learning & Wellness Group for leaders, including some cohort members who are chaplains, engaged in spiritual care and advocacy ministries with those who are incarcerated or formerly incarcerated. The third cohort, which Rev. Jacob is a co-convener of, also launched last fall.
Restorative Justice at the Center
For many chaplains affiliated with NBA, especially those serving in prison and jail contexts, restorative justice is both a guiding principle and a daily practice. Rather than focusing on punishment, restorative justice seeks to repair harm, restore relationships, and rebuild community. Chaplains facilitate listening circles, support re-entry, and help individuals process trauma—always with a commitment to dignity, accountability, and hope.
“Restorative justice starts with the belief that every person, even those who’ve caused harm, has dignity and worth. I reflect that belief every time I offer compassion, prayer, and presence. Sometimes I help people write letters of apology, reflect on the impact of their actions, or spiritually prepare to make amends. These are sacred acts of reconciliation and restorative justice in motion.”- Rev. Dan Netting, Chaplain and Cohort Member of Prison & Jail Ministry Peer Learning & Wellness Group

Why Chaplaincy Matters Now
In a world marked by division and disconnection, chaplaincy offers a countercultural model of presence and community. Chaplains embody the belief that healing happens in relationship—with ourselves, with others, and with the Divine. Their work—supported by NBA’s commitment to accompany them and offer resources, enragement, and support—multiplies impact, weaving together practitioners from diverse backgrounds and settings.
As we celebrate the stories of leaders like Rev. Nora Jacob, we honor the broader tapestry of chaplaincy at NBA: a movement grounded in justice, compassion, and the transformative power of community.
