Why did you say yes to serving on the NBA Board of Trustees?
I said “yes” because the work NBA does is vital, both for the sustainability of organizations and for the well-being of the communities they serve. Too often, the individuals and communities most in need of support face the greatest barriers to accessing it. I was also deeply drawn to NBA’s commitment to values like compassion, belonging, and justice. I believe meaningful change happens when we intentionally create communities where people feel supported, valued, and connected, especially during challenging times.
NBA’s vision statement is “A world of thriving communities where justice and care ensure the well-being of all humanity.” What does that mean to you?
To me, building communities of justice and care means creating spaces where people from all backgrounds and experiences feel seen, valued, and supported, especially during difficult moments in life. This vision is reflected in one of my favorite hymns, For Everyone Born (A Place at the Table). Each verse reminds us of our shared responsibility to create communities rooted in inclusion, dignity, and belonging. The refrain calls us to celebrate the joy and justice that are possible when we care for one another and ensure everyone has a place at the table.
