Good News On a Joyous Day
March 6, 2026 | by NBA Cares

Elizabeth Barton faithfully attended church, read her Bible every day, and prayed often. She loved her congregation and contributed to its ministry through her sense of humor and her dedicated hands. However, everything changed when she started needing assistance. Without any family able to help her, Elizabeth moved to Parkside Manor, a skilled care facility in Bowling Green, MO.
For four years Elizabeth continued to read her Bible every day and pray often, but no one came to visit, and no one offered to serve her communion. Then, one December day in 2024, the Frankford (MO) First Christian Church visited Parkside for the first time, offering worship, communion and care packages to residents.
“Frankford discerned a new call to mission with the Silver Chalice Ministry, and asked themselves where was there a great need that they might fill,” relates Ethan Colbert, a member of the church’s Silver Chalice team. “Our new ‘Good News Crew’ soon formed to share a worship service every month at Parkside. We pledged to never discontinue the ministry as long as we are able.”
Church members went around to residents’ doors, asking if they would like to be served communion. When Elizabeth saw these strangers bringing her communion, she began to cry. She showed the group her torn and ragged Bible and told them about her beloved former church community.
Frankford has continued to come each month, bringing care, communion and happy conversations. In February 2025, Elizabeth asked if she might become a member of the church. She transferred her church membership to Frankford, reaffirmed her faith and celebrated with her new friends. At 99 years of age, Elizabeth became the newest — and oldest — member of Frankford on that joyous day. Elizabeth died in late October 2025, but her final year was filled with grace, inclusion, acceptance, care, love, and bread and cup.
Residents in care facilities have lost a great deal in their lives, including their church community. They may be wary of new friendships with those who will not return regularly to share and visit. How is your church inspired to minister to and with those in care facilities or at home?
