Protect Medicaid and SNAP

June 25, 2025 | by NBA Cares

The work of justice is Christ’s work—and we are Disciples of Christ. Today, we join our faith partners in opposing the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which threatens the health and dignity of millions through deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. At NBA, we pursue justice in community, in everything we do, and with everyone we serve. Please see the below statement from NBA’s Justice team.

PROTECT MEDICAID AND SNAP

Take Action Against H.R. #1: One Big Beautiful Bill

The recently passed House bill, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, proposes $600 billion in alarming cuts to Medicaid. This could jeopardize healthcare coverage for around 10.9 million individuals over the next decade, as highlighted by the Congressional Budget Office. The Senate version, now known as H.R. #1: “One Big, Beautiful Bill”, a reconciliation bill, threatens even deeper cuts, introducing restrictive work requirements for parents and capping provider taxes at a mere 3.5% by 2031, down from the current 6%. These changes will devastate rural hospitals and limit essential services for low-income families.

Moreover, the bill maintains $230 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known by its acronym “SNAP”, over the next ten years, alongside stricter work requirements that could strip vulnerable recipients of the support they desperately need. 1

A diverse group of both Republican and Democratic senators have voiced fierce opposition to this bill, illustrating its potentially harmful impact on our most vulnerable populations. Senators such as Susan Collins from Maine and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska stand against Medicaid cuts that risk the health of low-income families. Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania refuses to support any bill that undermines essential benefits, and Senator Patty Murray from Washington warns that the legislation favors billionaires while leaving struggling families suffering.

The justification for necessary federal spending cuts lacks credibility.  Most sections targeting this objective fail to provide for it, as they are primarily based on screening processes that will generate either “$0 savings” or, in the alternative, a minimum amount, according to experts.2 Instead of stabilizing our health systems, these cuts could lead to increased costs in other areas, ultimately burdening our economy.34

We cannot sacrifice essential services for questionable budgetary gains. It’s time to prioritize health and security for all citizens. Please take a moment to contact your senator and urge them to oppose H.R. 1, also known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

NBA is standing with the “Here We Stand” campaign sponsored by Lutheran Services in America.  Access its video through the link provided here, and follow the instructions provided through its QR code to repel the “One Big Beautiful Bill”.

As people of faith, we affirm the promotion of health as a signal of the presence of God himself among humanity (Luke 10:9). We urge the Senate to take consistent and sustainable steps that have a profound and lasting impact on people’s lives.5

Express to your Senator your opposition to this bill. Together, we can protect the rights and well-being of millions. Your voice matters—make it heard!  ACT NOW.
